How do I water my cyclamen from the bottom to ensure it stays alive as long as possible?

Reply:I have 4 cyclamen outside and they are growing beautiful. I water them once a week, form the top. I have done nothing else and they keep blooming for a very long time, more flowers each time
Reply:Stand the pot in a saucer and water the saucer watering when the soil is dry, making sure not to overwater as this can rot the plant.
Also, when a flower stem finishes blooming,it will form a seed head. Then the stem starts to bend towards the soil, in order to bury the seed to reproduce itself.Once this happens the plant will think its done its job and stop producing more flowers so....when a flower dies twist and pull it gently near the base of the stem to remove it, making sure not to leave any stem ,as this will rot and spread to the rest of the base of the plant.
Also stand the pot in a cool bright position to ensure a longer flowering period.
Reply:You can plant it higher and water the ground around it, or you can set it in rocks and water through the rocks to the roots below, or you can keep it in a pot and occasionally set the pot in the sink or a tub, put water up to the bottom of the bulbs for 5-8 minutes and then take it back out and drain the water - repeat as needed to keep the soil slightly moist.
Reply:If you're watering from the bottom, watch for hard water deposits that can get crusty on the top of the soil. They'll end up burning the tender stems and lower leaves of the plant.

Cyclamen problem?
I watered my cyclamen, just a bit, and all of the leaves and flowers drooped. Is there anything I can do or should I pitch it.
Cyclamen problem?
Cyclamen plants are very susceptible to a disease called "Fusarium Wilt". It attacks the vascular system within the plant--preventing water to be transmitted up into the foilage. I'd suggest you get rid of the plant and make sure you sterilize any infected tools, soil, pots, etc that came into contact with it before using them again.
When/IF you purchase your next cyclamen, try using a natural beneficial fungi that has been proven to be very useful against "Fusarium", "Pythium" and "Rhizoctonia" (all soil-borne diseases that attack most ornamental plants/shrubs).
There is a beneficial fungi called "Trichoderma" and it attacks these diseases and prevents their establishment. You can mix "Trichoderma" into your soil media and then plant your seeds or ornamentals into it. It has no detrimental affect on your desirable plants and will co-exist with them by setting up a protective barrier around the root system. It's also very effective on turf and will last for many, many months in the soil!
I've used "Trichoderma" professionally and at my home and am a firm believer in its use.

How do you sow and germinate cyclamen from a pod/seed.?
Cyclamen is very easy to grow. Sow it on top of seed-starting soil and keep evenly moist. I'd start them inside. These plants will seed themselves very easily if the pods are left on the plant over the winter.

It has taken mine 2 or 3 years to grow to flowering size. I have 2 adult plants, and had hoped that the "babies" would be cross bred, and exhibit characteristics of both, but so far they all look like one or other of the mature plants.
I originally grew the adult plants from seed, bought in a packet, which were germinated in damp compost on the top of a central heating boiler - germination was slow and erratic, and of 13 seeds planted only 2 grew to maturity.
I have had better results with my own seeds.

Reply:I am not sure of this plant, but I know how do you get (prety much any seed to grow). you need a wet napkin in a small plate, put the seeds there. The idea of this is that seeds need to grow small roots before you plant. So it should take you about a weak for them to grow. Then plant them in the ground. you should wet the napkin atleast everyday (it needs to be moist all the time) Hope this helps! =)) Thats how i grew my lemon tree. =)

During this dormant period the plant remains in the form of a subterranean tuber, which is in fact a swollen root As a tuber, the possibilities which exist for corms or bulbs do not exist, however, as in the case of a common potato (which is a similar organism), the tuber can be divided provided each portion has both a growth eye and part of the rooting region of the tuber.
This makes this operation more feasible in those species which have multiple growing points, such as Cyclamen graecum. However, since there are inevitable problems in efficiently sealing the cut edges to guard against rot, without the tuber desiccating, division of tubers is not a practical method of propagating plants regularly.
Experiments have been carried out in the use of Meristem culture to propagate Cyclamen, but it is not appropriate to detail this here.

now is the time. keep it in a dark place and don't over water it.just a little till it's time to bring it out to bloom.halloween is a good time to bring it out.

My cyclamen has yellow leaves. Too much or not enough water?
If the leaves are yellowing at the bottom, this is normal. As new flowers appear, there is only so much energy that the plant can support. Trim them off and don't water until the soil is dry a couple of inches below the soil line , make sure there is good drainage and good light. I toss mine after the blooming part is over and buy new ones though.

How can I revive frostbitten cyclamen?
Check out the FAQ of the Cyclamen society, they do mention that some plants can take frost and snow and survive depending on teh variety you have. They are very hardy here (Texas) but I do take pots in garage in summer when very wet and let them dry completly before reviving them in late fall

Most importantly, to keep them healthy, while they're still showing leaves or flowers, water them a few times a week, make sure their soil never dries out completely. But don't water them when they die down, as I said - store them somewhere, don't mistakenly think they're dead, they're not!

I bought cyclamen corms/bulbs this past fall..planted them in late september....planted 6 bulbs in light shade area...and I planted them among other shade plants (hosta). If is is hardy cyclamen and your up north..Id out my bulbs in the freezer until March(and plant them then)...hardy cyclamen requires 8 weeks or so of a freeze...if your down south...I cant help you...good luck

Reply:Depends on where you live...in zones 9-10, you could probably leave the cyclamen, out...It might however go dormant in the winter season...cyclamen, are native to the middle east; and go dormant in the colder drier months...The cape primrose, should be ok outside to zone 3, plant in light, to medium shade...

Reply:Depends on where you live...in zones 9-10, you could probably leave the cyclamen, out...It might however go dormant in the winter season...cyclamen, are native to the middle east; and go dormant in the colder drier months...The cape primrose, should be ok outside to zone 3, plant in light, to medium shade...

I have managed to kill two in the last 6 months what am I doing wrong. I never water them from above (i know not to do that) but this last one just started wilting on my and the stems went all mushy and now it has died. Does anyone know how I can bring it back to life? The best way not to kill it is to keep it cool (70 ish F) but not cold, moist, but not wet and lots of indirect sun but not a lot of direct sun. The cyclamen is a study in moderation. I have trouble with them too. Once you find the perfect spot and you remember to water it, but not too often, it will be a wonderful beautiful plant. I had one that survived over a year, and it was wonderful. Showy flowers and gorgeous leaves and then I went on vacation. Enjoy it while you can, you could bequeath it to a greenhouse. If you kill it you could remember the flower color and leaf pattern and buy a replacement so the children don't get upset. I've had so many plants and have so many, my children don't notice the comings and goings. Good luck.

Reply:you probably have your cyclamen as a houseplant; they work as a houseplant, but not well. i'm not sure where you live, but if you can plant it in a big container and keep it outside where it gets sun all day long it'll be happy. however, the key to having your cyclamen come back year after year is keep it away from frost and miracle gro. cyclamen are actually a tuber, and will die at the first sign of frost and get leggy and yucky with miracle gro. the best way to fertilize them is in fall; put a nice mulch on top of them, but mix in a tad bit of 5-5-5 with the mulch. that's all the fertilizer they need. also, they go dormant in summer, so don't worry-they're not dead. if you can, keep them in a shaded greenhouse during the hot months. and heck, if you live in the right area, you can grow them outside underneath trees! it all depends on where you live. hope that helps! :)

How dangerous is Cyclamen to a cat?
My cat got at my mother's new houseplant, some cyclamen. I've told her again and again to keep the plants out of the reach of the cat if she HAS to have the stupid things, but she wouldn't listen to me. As a result, my cat got curious, chewed up a good part of it and vomited repeatedly all over our carpet. I only found out last night what kind of plant it was and that it was harmful to kitties.
After she vomited up what was still in her tummy from breakfast and lunch, she started vomiting some foamy peachy-colored glob with little red bits in it (I debated whether those bits were blood or flower petals). I shut her in the laundry for the night, checking on her occasionally. She was lying in her bed, pupils dilated and purred when I petted her. This morning when I had checked on her she had only vomited twice more. Her eyes were no longer dilated and she submitted to being picked up, and purred. I plan on taking her to the vet tomorrow, but is the danger over? Will she be okay? =/

It is soothing for the animal. But other than since she did make it thought the night I would have to say your cat is out of the woods. It says that this plant can be harmful to cats, not fatal. Your cat will only do it once. And I'm sorry but no one can report you because of your concerns you did nothing wrong and this was not an act of Curelty. But call your vet and talk with him. Explain what happend and make sure he knows every thing. In the mean time watch you cat closely. Make sure she eat, drinks, and uses the potty like normal. If you see any changes in the cats behavior take the cat in to the vet a.s.a.p. I hope your cat gets feeling better.
Reply:Keep in mind that cat's don't only purr when they are happy. They often times purr when they are angry, hurt/sick, or very scared as well. A lot of people mistake a purring cat for a happy cat, and that is not always the case.

I've linked a list of poisonous plants below, maybe you should share it with your mom. I have alot of houseplants and usually hang the ones I don't want my cats to get into, from a plant hanger hooked onto the ceiling. There is virtually no way cats can get to a hanging plant unless it is near a table or some other object they can climb on.
Also, check out the link for ASPCA animal poison control center. They have a 24 hour hotline you can call, and they should be able to give you some more specific info about that specific plant.

Reply:They aren't really indoor plants... if you have it inside while it's flowering, best to keep it in a cool room and give it a freshen up in a protected place outside every few days. They like a bright well lit spot. If you have a tray or saucer under it, make sure when you water it, that it doesn't sit in water as the roots will rot. Drain it well before putting back. As the flowers finish, twist them off at the base of the plant... if you leave stems on it they can go mouldy and rot the plant.
Once it finishes flowering, best to put it outside in fresh air and it will go dormant during the hot weather... dies off to the bulb. Just keep it moist, not wet, until the new shoots begin to form. Then shake off all soil, and repot into fresh mix, and give a weak organic fertiliser like Seasol or fish emulsion. Should grow and flower bigger and better each year.
Make sure when it's repotted, that the bulb part (corm) is planted at the same level... on top of the mix.
Large corms can be cut in half and both halves can form seperate plants, but a risk of one or both halves rotting.

New cat is chewing house plants, especially cyclamen, is it poisonous?
Just brought new 1-2yr old all black girl home from shelter. She is exploring the house. When she went into my living room she started chewing a green fern type house plant, and then tried to start chewing the cyclamen, she tried a couple of times, so i shooed her away. Need to know if that is going to do her any harm. If it is, i will boot the plant out right away!

MANY common house and garden plants can kill a cat or make them very ill.....
I lost my beautiful cat cos of a bloody plant and that really hurts.

Please advice what I should do with my cyclamen bulbs
What should I do with my cyclamen plants now that the flowers are dying?
Well, you can always throw them out.
But if that's not an option... and they are in pots....
1. Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer (20-20-20) at half strength until April. Cut down the flower stalks, but do not cut down the leaves until they all die down on their own.
2. During the summer months, cyclamen go into dormancy. You need to water very little (like once every 2 weeks or less) and do not fertilize. Put them where rain water will not fall on them at all.
3. new shoots should start appearing in the fall. You can repot at this time (if necessary) and start watering regularly and fertilize monthly again. They will bloom in later winter or early spring again.

As the days get longer, late spring to early summer depending on where you live, the cyclamens will go into dormancy. They will stop flowering, and the leaves will dry up. I just keep mine in the pots, watering them only very occasionally, just enough to keep the tubers from shriveling up (maybe once a month or so.) Then keep the pots in a sheltered location, such as under a porch roof, and begin watering regularly when you see the new growth beginning in late fall or early winter. I have kept cyclamens going for more than 5 years in this way, repotting them in spring if the tubers are getting too large for the pot. I now have many new plants which started from the seeds. The seedlings grow pretty slowly, but it's very cool to increase my collection for free.
